Dent de Lys

Mai-November
Moderate hike

This is the ultimate hike to enjoy an after-work sunset and even a sunrise after a night of camping. Towering above the Lac Léman with views all the way to the 4000 summits in Valais, the summit will not disappoint. Be prepared for a short, but very adventurous climb over rocks and across the steep ridge.

A Few Gems

The epic ridge allows for cool photos with som fun climbing sections to make you feel like a monkey. There should also be some ibex roaming around so keep a lookout for them!

After a 15 minute drive from “Les Paccots”, you’ll want to park on the side of the road near a dirt path in the bend of the road crossing a river before the “Buvette de ?Saletta” From there, follow the signs to the “Col de Lys” which will take you by a small barn and through some cow fields. Don’t miss the turn off to the left in the small forest! The ascent to the pass is quite steep, but that’s the only touch part, then it’s pure fun for the rest of the hike.

There is the possibility to camp somewhere on the pass (this also depends on the cow’s location as they have priority) from which you can enjoy spectacular sunset views. If you’re not done just yet though, continue the climb to the summit following the ridge. Keep a lookout for ibex as they can often be noticed freely roaming around the summit!

Do not be alarmed by having to descend a few meters, but be careful because it is quite slippery! The path simply detours some rocks making the ascent easier. At this point, you’ll have reached the ladders and chains to help you climb over the rocks. It’s not a dangerous section, simply be cautious of your steps and go at your own pace. Plan at least one hour for this part.

Once at the summit, there are a few benches to enjoy a lunch as you stare at the 360° views of the surrounding mountains. Otherwise, you can even set up a mat and sleeping bag to sleep under the stars. It does get chilly, especially if there’s wind, so be sure to pack warm clothes! It’s definitely one of my favourite sunrise spots so be sure to wake up in time to catch!
