Lac Noir & Schwarzhorn

Mai-November
Moderate hike

This is the perfect hike for a day to unwind in the mountains surrounded by rainbow-coloured flowers, towering summits and crystal blue lakes. Leaving from Chandolin, you’ll be able to challenge yourself on the first uphill to the lakes and, for those looking for an extra challenge, add the scrambly climb to the top of Schwarzhorn from which you can admire views across the Rhone Valley and of the surrounding summits.

A Few Gems

The multiple sparkling turquoise lakes for a beautiful refreshing swim! And the fun terrain that allows you to explore many miny summits.

From the Chandolin chairlift parking lot, follow the narrow path on the left that takes you in the direction of the village. Follow the hello signs to Lac Noir, zig-zagging up the mountain always crossing under the chairlift. This first part consists of a nice consistent climb through the forest and then in flowery meadows. Once you reach your first objective, Lac Noir, you can stop for a picnic and even a (very) refreshing swim.

From the lake, for even better views, you can go up the rugged path up to Schwarzhorn. Look out for the blue dots on the rocks marking the trail. The terrain is quite steep in some sections and you’ll have to walk across big rocks, but that’s just a part of the fun! At the top, the views are incredible, spanning out from the Val d’Anniviers to the Rhone Valley with all the peaks in the distance. See how many lakes you can spot!

For the descent, it is possible to go back the way you came, or make it more interesting by doing a loop. If you choose the latter, go down the dirt path to Ills and then follow the flowery meadow back up through the rocks to the “Pas de l’Illsee”. It’s the last uphill you’ll do, promise! Then it’s all downhill from there. You have multiple path options and I would advise following the main one towards Chandolin to see some different scenery. If you’re in need of a cold drink, stop at one of the many terrasses in Chandolin and enjoy, you’ve earned it!
