Les Dents de Morcles

June - October
Challenging hike

Finally hike that small peak you’re always passing by on the highway to the mountains! These very unique “teeth”, located above Bex, are very distinguishable and one of them can be hiked! This hike provides the views, trails in grassy fiels, winding paths through loose rock and some very fun scrambling up boulders!

Level: T4 (alpine hike)
Elevation gain: 1353 m
Distance: 19 km
Time required: 7.5 hours round trip
Public transport: no
Infrastructure: ladders and a hut half-way up
Depart from: Lérié, following the very windy road up from Chiboz (exit highway at Martigny)

Getting there: take the exit at Martigny and follow the road up towards Fully and Chiboz. Then simply continue on the road heading up and finally arrive at a parking called Lérié

Going up: the mountain path starts at the end of the parking lot. First, follow the directions to Col de Fenestral. This windy path leads you along the edge of the Grand Chavalard with some small waterfall crossings and views across to the Mont Blanc Massif. You’ll arrive at very green pastures and a couple of lakes which make a great swimming spot. Continue your hike upwards all the way to the Fenestral hut (Cabane de Fenestral). There, you can enjoy a small refreshment with a very nice view of the French Alps before you start the scramble.

After having studied the surrounding mountains, follow the path to Dents de Morcles. It will take you out of the pastures to rocky grounds and maybe even some snow! Make sure to look out for the rock signage or big sticks to guide you. Once you reach the ridge, you’ll have to climb on the bigger rocks which will take you all the way to the top. You can either follow the marked path with chains to help you up, or enjoy finding your own rock climbing wall. Once at the top, do not despair if you’re in the clouds, they can clear up really quickly so make sure to stay for a while because the view is definitely worth it!

Going down: Take the same path to the hut. Then, you have the option of taking a left towards Petit Pré – Parc à Modzons – Lépié. This allows you to see some other scenery and walk through flowery fields and bushy forests.
